Emily understands the employer perspective because she served for 20 years as an in-house lawyer and leader at UPS, a Fortune-50 multinational, public corporation with an enormous workforce comprised of union and non-union employees. Prior to UPS, Emily practiced labor and employment law at a large national law firm and completed a two-year federal court clerkship for Chief Judge Duross Fitzpatrick, Middle District of Georgia.
Emily has extensive experience (1) as a legal advisor on all types of employment related issues; (2) as a litigator of all manner of employment-related disputes; and (3) in all three realms of traditional labor law: union avoidance, collective bargaining, and grievance arbitrations. Emily is a champion of “upstream risk mitigation” initiatives designed to systematically draw insights from data and learnings from legal disputes; identify root causes of the most commonly occurring issues; and implement corrective and preventive action to avoid future occurrences that may be culturally, reputationally, and financially destructive for companies.
Having been a Deputy General Counsel of a large corporation and actually managed a global legal department, she has profound appreciation for the dual roles that outside counsel play as protectors and business enablers for their clients, and what separates certain law firms from the pack in their ability to truly partner with their clients to deliver value through top notch, cost effective legal support. It’s what drew Emily to Martenson, Hasbrouck & Simon in the first place, having had a firsthand account as a client.
Emily believes that her ability to see issues from different perspectives is the single most important attribute underlying her strength as an advocate, negotiator, and advisor. She prides herself on her commercial mindset and being a results-driven legal strategist, problem solver, and change-maker. Her return to private practice completes a circle of legal vantage points and is emblematic of her holistic approach to servicing clients and her ability to turn insights into outcomes.
Emily was a member of the Leadership Atlanta class of 2024, and she has served on numerous non-profit boards and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Mount Vernon School in Atlanta. She has completed executive education business-related programs at Yale, University of Pennsylvania/Wharton, and Emory.
